A Prayer of Power

The content that resonates with people is often exposed by the requests that come in to reprint it. Today’s post was triggered by a request made not long ago. This is from my book 100 Days on the Road to Grace; A Devotional for the Sexually Broken, Chapter 10:

A Prayer of Power

Ephesians 6:17 calls God’s Word the “sword of the spirit.” To pray in His Word is to pray in the power of the Holy Spirit.   Today’s reading is a Scripture–based prayer. Consider offering it to the Lord on a daily basis until you start seeing breakthroughs in your life. Spiritual warfare elements are part of our struggle as our battle is not only against the flesh (Romans 7), but also against the hosts of darkness (Ephesians 6).

“Awesome God in Heaven above, I ask that You would grant me the gift of humility today so that I might be a recipient of Your sufficient grace for me.1

Please strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner man, so that Christ will dwell in my heart through faith, so I will be rooted and grounded in love, able to comprehend the breadth, length, height and depth of the love of Christ, and be filled up to all the fullness of God. Lord, You are able to do far more abundantly beyond all that I ask or think. To You, Lord, be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever.2

In the name of Jesus, as a citizen of Heaven,3 I confess as sin and renounce all involvement with every form of lust, including sexual fantasy, pornography, adultery, masturbation, visiting strip bars or adult bookstores, and any sex that is outside of marriage between a man and his wife. Father in Heaven, please take back any ground that I might have given the enemy in these areas. (Add any struggles to this list as needed.)

Although my spirit is willing, my flesh is weak.4 Please deliver me from all evil today and provide the strength, wisdom, and discernment I need to continually stand firm.5 Please fight against the spiritual forces that would fight against me and my family today,6 and send Your angels to fight for us.7 Destroy every plan of the enemy, and bring the prayers of others that we need today.

I ask that the God of peace would sanctify me entirely, and that my spirit and soul and body would be preserved complete and without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful are You who calls me, and You will bring it to pass.8

I ask that all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander would be put away from me, along with all malice. Help me to be kind to others today, tender–hearted, and forgiving, just as God in Christ has forgiven me.9

Lord, if there are any lies I’ve bought into, please expose them and replace them with Your truth. I ask that Your Holy Spirit would guide me to the specific verses in Your Word that I need to see, and open my mind and heart to receiving the truth.10

Father, I ask that I may be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that I will walk in a manner worthy of You, Lord, to please You in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, and strengthened with all power, according to Your glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience. I joyously give You thanks for qualifying me to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. Thank You for rescuing me from the domain of darkness and transferring me to the kingdom of Your beloved Son, in Whom I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.11

Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
